The Adventures of Jonah

Front cover only

Full front and back

Ok... permission granted to blast me. It's a stretch for being a super hero i know. I am considering pulling the astronaut out and putting a super hero in there. I got wayyyy to caught up in the idea of the whale being a giant space fish...and then I just let myself go with it. I'm happy with the rendering, but after seeing other people's creative solutions to the project, I feel that it was a missed opportunity to create a much more superhero character.

-----------
Ok, i re-uploaded the images with minor changes. I ended up doing a combo of everyone's suggestions. I removed the spaceship from the FRONT... but still kept it in there.... and I think the tube from the spaceman looked weird cuz it was just a big bright white line. i added some shading to it so its not so glaringly bright. Whatcha think?

  1. Love it Mark! My favorite one of all your pieces. Great composition and monster design. I want to draw a space whale now! Simple solution to the lack of superhero-ness: Make Jonah more of a Buck Rogers character!

  2. You're finally loosening up and having fun with it! One critique though: Not sure about the spaceships visual impact on the piece..... Maybe fade it way out?

  3. Mark, no need to doubt your concept on this one, the execution speaks for itself. This is by far and away your best one yet. Who says astronauts aren't heros? This is wonderful.

For the sake of critique, i feel like you could lose the hose on Johah, it's distracting to me and would add another level of solus to to the mood.

  4. I also agree with Arman's comment about dropping that space ship WAY in the b/g.

  5. good suggestions. I agree... its weird that sometimes I will feel uneasy about an aspect of my design, but I don't do anything about it... I felt like the hose looked weird, and the ship looked a little out of place too... but those thoughts were in the back of my mind.... unresolved problems that i was too lazy to fix. This is why I need the community critique. I'm really loving the interaction with other artists. I hope we can all maintain this level of enthusiasm for the blog.

  6. Well, ya know I love it! Agree w/ Arman and Zach on crits. Great work though. Can't blame u for getting caught up w/ the beast.

  7. Nice work homey! I like the idea of Jonah in space. I love the wood etching feel of the render, and the whale is superbly drawn. I don't mind the ship, but I agree with the lads that the hose looks a little off. Composition is great for the minimal elements.

  8. Dude, great freaking textures on the whale and background. I am with the others on the space ship and hose comments, but so I think its a great piece

  9. Great work! I would loose the ship altogether, however I like the cord. I like
fishing(worm on a hook) and umbilical symbolism it generates.

  10. Good point joey... I feel like something needs to go in that corner though. perhaps a moon... or a distant galaxy...

  11. Don't get intimidated by empty space. Sometimes the negative space of an image can generate mucho interest. I think by not having anything it would add to the isolation and paranoia of the unknown.
